(AhlulBayt News Agency) - On Monday, militants of the so-called "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria" (ISIS) launched a powerful assault in the surroundings of the strategic T-4 (Tiyas) Military Airport in eastern part of Homs province striking Syrian Arab Army's defensive positions east of the airbase, at T-4 Pump Station, and southeast, at the recently recaptured Air defense base.
The military source, said that this was the most violent attack by the aforementioned terror group since it retook the ancient city of Palmyra (Tadmor) on December 11th.
According to the source, after a day-long battle, the attack was ultimately repelled with ISIS failing to make any advance.
Government forces managed to destroy 3 tanks, more than 5 technical vehicles killing more than 50 ISIS terrorists in the process. Besides, SAA soldiers destroyed 2 VBIEDs (vehicle borne improvised explosive device) in the T-4 Pump Station surroundings where militants were desperately trying to breach Army's defense lines.
Moreover, government troops conducted a successful counterattack on Monday afternoon recapturing Al-Raddad area near Al-Sharifah village west of the airbase. As a result of today's battle, the buffer zone around the T-4 Airbase was further expanded.
In the meantime, ISIS terrorists managed to shoot down a Syrian "Gazelle" military helicopter hitting it with ZU-23-2 anti-aircraft autocannon. Both pilots, Colonel Kader Ali and Lieutenant Colonel Abbas Younes (see photo above), died in the crash.
